Over-Dimensional Cargo Transport: A Planning Checklist
By ATTPL Fleet · · 2 min read
How to plan over-dimensional cargo (ODC) transport in India: route survey, permits, vehicle selection, escorts, timing, loading and safety.

What is ODC
Over-dimensional cargo (ODC) is any load that exceeds normal legal limits for length, width, height or weight — such as transformers, heavy machinery, wind turbine parts and large structural items.
Route survey
- Measure bridges, underpasses, overhead wires and turning radii
- Check road and bridge load capacity
- Identify toll plazas and narrow stretches
- Plan alternative routes

Permits and approvals
ODC movement needs permits from the relevant road authorities and may need police escort and approvals from utilities for lifting cables. Apply well in advance.
Vehicle and loading
Choose the right hydraulic axle or low-bed trailer, calculate axle loads, and secure the cargo with proper lashing and blocking. Use experienced riggers for loading and unloading.
Timing and safety
ODC often moves at night or in restricted hours. Use pilot vehicles, warning lights and signs, and keep communication between all vehicles.

Frequently asked questions
Who issues ODC permits?
Permits are issued by the relevant road and state authorities along the route.
Why move ODC at night?
Traffic is lower and many authorities restrict ODC to specific hours.
How early should I plan?
Weeks in advance for large consignments, to allow route surveys and permits.
